Free indie games or Steam demos? What to check before you play
By Indie Gem Dispatch ·
Understand the difference between a free full game, a demo and an upcoming release, with source-checked examples from our indie catalogue.
A free download can mean different things
A demo gives you a portion of a game to evaluate. It may have a separate install, limited content or progress that does not carry into the full release. A free browser game is a different offer: the publicly available game itself can be played without a purchase, although optional support or future editions may be separate.
Our catalogue therefore separates Free game, Free demo and Paid game. We do not list a full upcoming game as free merely because its demo is available. Prices vary by region and change over time, so check the linked store before deciding.
Browser play: check where progress lives
Petaldoku is available to play on itch.io without a purchase. Its official page says progress is saved in the browser; clearing site data or using private browsing can affect that progress. BonartGames is affiliated with the operator of Indie Gem Dispatch, so this example is disclosed rather than presented as an independent endorsement.
For any browser title, check whether it supports the input you plan to use and whether it saves locally or to an account. A browser version does not automatically imply offline play or a native mobile release.
Upcoming games with demos: look at the scope
Faraway Galaxy and Pizzapocalypse: A Slice of Hope both have demos linked from their Steam pages. The full games remain upcoming in the source information we checked. The former centres on tactical cards; the latter on 3D movement. Those differences may help decide what to try first, without implying we have reviewed either game.
Read the developer’s stated demo scope and recent patch notes. A known issue mentioned in an announcement may matter more to your immediate session than a long list of promised full-game features. Check the actual download button; an old festival announcement does not guarantee indefinite demo availability.
A paid-game listing is not a confirmed trial
Fofumia is a paid game in the Steam listing we checked. We have not confirmed a separate demo, so its catalogue entry leaves that field unconfirmed. An absent fact should not be replaced with a guess.
Before downloading, confirm platform support, required storage, input, demo scope and any account requirements on the official page. Our overview is a starting point; it is not a hands-on recommendation or a score.
Use the catalogue to narrow the choice
Choose Access to separate a free full game from a trial, then combine Platform, Release status and Play style. A contradictory combination can correctly return no results. Reset the filters to explore again, or share the filtered URL with a friend.
Availability in this guide was checked on November 1, 2026. We will amend the article when its underlying facts change; changing the date alone would not make the information more current.
